Ongoing powers are one of the things that I like best about CH’s design, because I think it really helps with giving the players a feeling of power and control. Regular powers are hit-or-miss, because you roll for them and therefore there’s a chance you’ll fail, so it feels more like magic spells; but Ongoing powers just work, which feels like activating a superpower, which means you’re a superhero.
It’s something that doesn’t really happen in Savage Worlds: You either have a power that’s already active (with the Weird Science Arcane Background) or a power you need to roll to activate. It took some time to come up with Ongoing powers – the trick was realising they need to have consequences as an offset – and perhaps unsurprisingly, they exist mostly due to playtest feedback.
